FIRST Robotics Presentation

My Presentation on FIRST Robotics
I gave a presentation at the Design Museum of Helsinki on our Robotics program at Ramona.

This was a public event aimed to increase public interest in Technology. The title was “Augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D printing and robotics in education”. The program was in English. The event was posted in the Museum web page.
There were about 40 people in the audience, most of them educators interested in Technology.

Design Museum in Helsinki

This was the announcement on the website.   "Join our afternoon event with experts within the fields of education, design and technologies to discuss the future of learning. What are the new ways of teaching with digital technologies? The afternoon event gives a platform for discussion on new ways of teaching and talking about digital technologies and design practice within the school and museum context."

The event is organized in collaboration with the Fulbright Finland specializing in academic exchanges between Finland and North America.

“Talks of the day:
Jaana Brinck: Augmented reality sandbox for early childhood learning
In her presentation Brinck will talk about +Andscape: Augmented reality sandbox for early childhood learning. The talk focuses on creative play with technology, participatory design and the new curriculum of Early childhood education and care in Finland.

Sam Northern: Encountering Phenomena with Virtual Reality
Northern´s talk is about how VR enables experiential learning by simulating real-world environments. 3D immersion has the ability to change students’ outlook on the world and their place in it. The possibilities of where students go and what they do are endless.

Laura Euro: Design, make and learn using 3D technologies
Euro tells us about the 3DBear, that helps to create a learning environment in which people can learn 3D thinking in the class room with help of 3D printing, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) – the skills that make them prevail in 21st century.

Aulikki Flagan: FIRST Robotics:  The presentation focuses on the FIRST Robotics, a high school program where students have 6 weeks to build a working robot that plays sports in competition against other high schools in US and around the world”.

My robotics students made me a video just for this presentation.  I was very impressed with the quality of the video.

I engaged the audience by asking questions.  Knowing Finns, they were not expecting this and I had to convince them that answering is OK!  At the end, I asked if there was any teacher who would like to start similar program here in Finland and I actually got one positive response.  Mikko Sallinen from Helsinki Vocational School was interested in the program and we agreed to meet at his school at a later day.
