WEEKEN FUN AND WINTER BREAK IN FEBRUARY

Skiing Holiday
February 18-25.  It’s winter break (skiing holiday, one week) in Helsinki. Now is time to explore skiing, museums and travel

Two days of cross country skiing and a visit to Kaisakoti, established by the wife of the former president Kyösti Kallio in 1938. There are very few downhill skiing resorts in souther Finland because the land is so flat. Most of the people prefer cross country skiing anyway.

Weekend visit to the wartime bomb shelter, now a Civil Defense Museum in Helsinki. The premises included old equipment, scale models, a diorama of wartime homes, and a basement shelter constructed to resemble a wartime (1939-1944) bomb shelter with bombing sound effects.

Time to travel. I took a Viking Line cruise to Stockholm. Buffets are wonderful on the boat.  You have a two-hour slot to eat and drink as much as you want. Beer and wine are readily available and is included in the buffet.

There are several shows during the 16-hour trip. Night club and bars are open till 4 am. The boat docked at 8 am and I took a bus to the centrum.  There I walked to the old town and tried to get to the Nobel Museum and The House of Nobility, but it was Monday and the museums were closed.  I walked and walked and had a lunch in a nice restaurant and then took a bus back to the cruise. It departed at 16.30 and I was back in Helsinki the next day at 10.10 am.
