Multidiscipline curriculum

Monialaiset oppmiskokonaisuudet seminar.

7th Grade Life Science Books

The new school reform calls for teachers to work together to develop curriculum to teach the same topic in many subjects.  This seminar was for future teachers to train them to develop this kind of thinking.  In the future, the teachers need to learn to work together, develop multidiscipline  curriculum, determine the goals, plan a lesson, conduct the lesson and create a rubric and assessment.

One example that was given to teachers to start with the thinking process was a website called STEAMOC. https://www.monialaiset.fi/steamok/
In this site, teachers can read ideas and how to implement the ideas.  The Ministry of Education funds these projects.  The goal is to develop innovative learning environments that directs students in teams to think world-wide problems and how to solve them.
These lessons were created together with pilot schools and in Spring 2019 these lessons are free to schools that want to use them.

One example:  AGENDA 2030.  This examines the following topics.  Poverty, Food, Health, Education, Gender Equity, Water and Sanitation, Energy, Work and Economics, Stable Infrastructure, Prevention of Inequality, Safe Living Conditions, Climate Change, Oceans, Terrestrial Ecosystems, Peace, Global Communication.  Students work together to solve these problems in many disciplines.

Mentor Teacher advising Future Teachers on how to
create a Multidiscipline Curriculum
In this workshop, the teachers worked together to create a lesson plan.  The first topic was forest.  Every discipline concentrates on forests (physics, chemistry, biology, economy, health, geographt, etc.)

The second topic was Energy.  Biology teachers created a nice lesson.  They started with photosynthesis, moved into humans and then energy in different foods.  Physics teachers concentrated on how to move energy from one place to another (circuits) and chemistry teachers on electromagnetic radiation.
Biology Interpretation on the task

These are the notes I took during the lecture. Ideas and comments from teachers.
“But teachers don’t have time to work together".
Multidiscipline:  Could be done with few teachers.
Outdoors; chemistry, bio, math, history, create a nature day with different stations.
Combine Biology, Home Economics, History, Geography; collect berries, in bio and home economics for example make something.

High school students teach lower grades, chemistry. High school students have to figure out on their topic and learn it before teaching, and vice versa.  Assessment.
