Helsingin Normaalilyseo Teacher Training in Chemistry

Future chemistry teacher in action
High school Chemistry.  There were 11 students, 6 boys and 5 girls in this class.
Halla Antti was the pre service teacher.

He started by asking names and they had to identify one element from periodic table.  Monomers  and Condensation reactions,
Two girls talked at the beginning and continued to talk most of the time.

Teacher reviewed what students learned in a previous lecture.

New lecture: Reaction series.  He gave a task; prepare 30 kg of sulfuric acid.  How would you prepare it.  H2SO4
Asked students to think and talk… nobody answered.
Take S first and then you should link O to it.  How to do it.  Girl answered .. burn Sulphur.
S +O2 > SO2
A boy said to use H2O2.  But it would not work.
SO2 + O2 > 2 SO3
Boy answered; use water.  SO3 + H2O > H2SO4.  Next, he showed an illustration with the computer.
Students read statements from a book and they were supposed to try to understand the statements.  Teacher then explained every sentence with an explanation with pictures. He showed the reactions that were involved on preparation of the items.
The two girls were annoying, they were poking each other with a pen and the teacher did not react.

Next students pulled out laptops to do problems with a computer.  The program automatically made numbers in subscripts.  = was arrow.
The two girls in the front finally calmed and started working.  One of them even answered on balancing equations problems.  She was able to balance very fast.  Series reactions.
One girl walked in and mumbles something she was upset with.
They had to balance series reactions.

What is the final volume of Cl2 gas if T= 22C and P is 1035 mBar.  Mass is given KClO4=200 g Molar mass was given.  The teacher worked out the problem with a computer.  Students were really skilled with the computer, using the chemistry program.

5 minutes left.  Students performed another problem by themselves.  Teacher walked around seeing if students had problems. More homework.  3.6 p. 98

Then teacher feedback.  He was reflecting on his teaching first.  He said it was fun.  Then I expressed my opinion.  I commented on his voice which was very pleasant.  He stressed the important points with different tones and it made the students pay more attention and learn the concepts.  The master teacher did not give many opinions, she wanted me to leave before giving him the comments.
