Digital Education

Juho  Moilanen explains the new digital world.  
Group teaching:  Biology and Geography Instructors at the Helsinki University game together tho have this lecture on Digital Education for pre-service teachers.  In addition, several company representative gave lectures on different tools that can be used in Education.  Next year everything will be digital.  This includes all the lecture materials for teachers and all the assignment and assessments for students.  This means that everyone must have computer.
There were 24 students, 17 females, 7 males in this class. Lecturers were Sara Lindholm (biology), Hannele  Cantrell (geography) and Juho Moilanen, Viikki Normal School lecturer in Geography.

The topic was information technology & how time has changed.  Go digital. Why go digital?  Juho talked pros and cons.  Two years ago, teachers were forced to go digital.  In High School students are required to bring laptops to class. In upper school (grades 6-9), teachers are required to give written assessments and comments digitally.
Abitti.fi is a program that gives students an access tom marticulation exam that all the high school students must take in order to graduate from high school.  This year it's still optional, either paper format or digital. Next year everything will be digital. 

Other digital tool introduced was Libre office.
Marja Penttinen (Biology&Geography), who works at Sanoma Bro that is a Publisher for this tool, gave a presentation. It publishes all the Biology books.  The company has now created a digital biology programs.  All the assessments are digital.  She introduced all the digital books and explained the resources.

      1.  Next tool: Ohjaamo, a digital program to monitor students’ performance. Different counties have different resources.  Students also have access to her/his own performance. Not all the students’ educational materials are free for compulsory education.  In high school, everyone has to buy books, computers, and other materials. 
Schools or counties have the freedom to choose either digital or books.

      2.  Next tool: Compassi for high schools. Assessments are made for students. The program automatically grades the assessments.  Teacher can add personal comments to students.
Merike Kesler, from a company called Opinkirjo, gave the next presentation.  She explained the TuKoKe, an International Competition for students in US. This is sponsored by Intel ISEF. 
This is a science competition for 4-22 age students. According to her, 
the competition increases artistic skills, motivation, and students learn theory different way, they learn what science means. Petteri Timonen was the best competitor from Finland. 

In high school, students have 75 courses to choose from, three of them are research courses. 
Students are monitored continuously for participation, not just the end product.
