Physics Methods Class

Students design a physics problem to be used in the classroom.
It was time again to attend a Physics Method class. The title of the lesson today was
"Study Plan and Teaching Development"

There were 9 pre-service teachers in this class- 5 female 4 male students

Topics for today’s lesson were:
1.  Curriculum planning,
2.  Assessment as a way to develop learning
3.  Being present
4.  Group work
5.  Final Exam
6. Reflections on the curriculum

In Finnish "Opetuksen suunnittelu, arviointi osana oppimisen kehittäminen
Läsnäolo, ryhmätyö,
Loppu Tentti kurssiarviointi suunnittelu "

All the lecture materials are posted online so the students pulled out today's lesson on a computer.  They formed small groups and started brainstorming. Teaching Physics.  What are the good criteria in assessment.
Group work. The problem was to create a task for students in Mechanics section of Physics and an assessment.
What kind of task, what do students need to know, what knowledge to reach by grade 9?

Students got a freedom to design anything. 10 minutes.
Students then presented their lesson plans.

Instructor asked further questions: What knowledge do students need to perform this task.  Class Discussions followed.

Which one is more important content or objective?

Group work continued in more detail.  Get familiar with the physics objectives and the criteria; what is good learning. What instrument is used to measure what the student has learned.
Plan how to achieve this objective
How a teacher can get information on student learning and how to support the students?

Create 3-4 ppt slides and present the plan to other pre-service teachers.  Time run out, so the presentations will be next time we meet.

Students have an access to lecture material in their computers

Students brainstorming

What is good about these lectures is that all the answers come from the students.  The instructor's role is a moderator.  He corrects the misinterpretations and adds his own opinions on the answers.
