Mathematics Lesson Planning

Lecture on how to develop teaching materials in mathematics and how to develop as a teacher.

Professor was Hannu Markkula.  The theme was this semester lectures was “Teacher as examiner of her/his work”.

There were 31 students the class; 10 males, 21 females. It’s interesting, always more females than males in all the education classes.

Today’s lecture: Time management for Beginning Teachers and Engagement in Diagnostics

First we watch and inspirational video; youtube.com/watch?v=AkKtQeEQNhM
Notes on video:
-The teacher writes lesson plan on the board and practices it before he presents it to his students

-Fill in the planks problem solving. 5 ways to solve if answer is 5, three ways if answer is 3.  Must be a three-digit subtraction.

-Students must discover the rules.  Other teachers watched the lecture.  -Then they had a math teachers meeting where everyone gave an opinion.

It was a teaching moment.  This is a must video for all the math teachers!

The instructor, Hannu was friendly with good sense of humor.  The lecture was interesting, engaging. After the video students discussed the video with a partner and then with the whole class.
-communication between teachers
-problem solving in math
-teacher first practice by himself, then presented to colleagues, then to     bigger audience
-manipulative materials on the board

Professor's idea was that each year every teacher must develop one good unit in mathematics and then share it with colleagues.  This way in a long run there will be many lesson plans to choose from.

In Finland teachers are paid only for hours they teach.  No compensation for planning or grading.

Next, he gave a Power Point Presentation on how to structure a classroom. This ppt was developed by Peter Liljenthal. The ling below shows his vision how a class should be conducted.

Next the instructor talked about action research.  His slides were in English.  Teacher as a researcher or practitioner.  The idea was to choose a topic where you think you can  make a difference, change for better.
